Schlossberg Cave, Saarland, Homburg, Germany

Below the ruins of the Hohenburg on the Schlossberg are Europe's largest mottled sandstone caves. Mysterious passageways lead visitors in imposing domed halls, which exert a special attraction because of the yellow, red and yellow-red discoloration of the sand. The result is the new red sandstone that forms the ridge above the town of Homburg, before about 250 million years ago.
