Britzingen Muggardt vineyards, Müllheim, Markgräflerland, Black Forest, Germany

Muggardt is a small town with about 70 inhabitants in the district Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg. It belongs to Britzingen, a village which was founded on 1. January 1974 after Müllheim was incorporated. The Winzergenossenschaft Britzingen, which manages the Muggardter Berg, went to the beginning of the 21st. Century new ways to stop the increasing decline of the steep slope. It acquired through a land consolidation process, an area of one hectare of Muggardter mountain, which is under wine law to the location Britzinger Sonnhohle and leased the vine to two members. The work in the non-navigable steep vineyards had become too large and uneconomical, so it was decided to create here cross terraces on shallow Kalksteinverwitterungsboden. They were completely re-planted in the spring of 2004 with Spätburgunder vines. The aim was to produce a quality red wine at this - for the Markgräflerland rather rare - pure south facing. The first vintage of this wine was pressed in 2006.
