Although many modern Balinese houses are arranged much like houses in the west, there are still a great number of traditional Balinese homes. Like houses in ancient Rome the Balinese house looks inward; the outside is simply a high wall to keep the bad spirits out. Inside there will be a garden and a separate small building (or bale) for each function. There will be one building for cooking, one building for washing and the toilet, and a separate building for each "bedroom", as well as a grain storage and the family temple. The buildings are arranged after the feng shui principle, involving the physical and spiritual world.
