The fishing island belonged to the oldest part of the medieval city Cölln. Of the medieval buildings, only one is preserved after the Second World War. The eight-hectare island belonged to the oldest part of the medieval city of Cölln. Until the 15th Century there lived wealthy fishermen and boatmen. In the 17th Century developed the area to the quarters of the poor people, the so-called fishing corner. Until the Second World War, the old town preserved its medieval-picturesque flair. In the Second World War, the fishing island was largely destroyed, the remaining old building substance was demolished from 1967 to 1971. Only one building has survived: the Friedrichsgracht 15 from 1740, which has now found its place on Märkischen Ufer 12. By 1972, five skyscrapers and two double skyscrapers were built on the Fischerinsel.
