Ephraim Palace, Berlin, Germany

In the Ephraim Palace, the Stadtmuseum Berlin shows special exhibitions on a wide range of topics in the history and culture of Berlin. The "Salon Ephraim" and the museum laboratory offer events, workshops and hands-on activities for the whole family. Veitel Heine Ephraim, court jeweler and coin tenant of King Frederick II., Had the magnificent Rococo palace built from 1762 to 1766. Soon it was considered the "most beautiful corner" of Berlin. Ephraim's name lives on in naming the palace to this day. In addition to its attractive gantry and the angular room form, the building has one of the most beautiful staircases in Berlin in the form of an oval. Moving history between East and West In 1936/37, the palace had to give way to the extension of the Mühlendamm. The facade parts then stored in the Berlin district of Wedding. West Berlin's plans to rebuild the palace in Kreuzberg district failed in 1982. Instead, the spolia came to East Berlin as part of an East-West cultural exchange. During the redesign of the Nikolaiviertel to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Berlin, the Ephraim Palace found its present location a few meters from the former location. With the preserved original components it could be rebuilt according to historical model as a museum.
